                         PROFILE

Born Mary O'Mahony in Dublin.   Public service and politics were a part of her life. Mary is a grandniece of Irish Patriot Michael Collins, and her sister Nora Owen, T.D. is a former Minister for Justice.

Mary Banotti has been a prominent, respected elected official in Ireland in her own right for many years. In fact, she was narrowly defeated in the race to be the President of Ireland, finishing a strong second in a multi-candidate field.

In 1984 Mary was first elected as a Member of the European Parliament. Since being elected to the European Parliament, she has worked on a variety of issues including environmental and women's rights and is currently the European Parliament President's Mediator for Transnationally Abducted Children.

Mary Banotti resigned from Parliament in June 2004.

Mary worked as a nurse in the USA, Canada, England, Italy and Africa. While in Africa, she was recruited to give mass anti-measles vaccinations and it was here that she developed her life long interest in development issues. She joined Irish Distillers (1972-84) as a Nurse / Industrial Welfare Officer and set up the Employee Welfare & Health Systems in the Company.
